Overview: Macbeth is the story of a man who gives in to the temptation to gain leadership by murder when he might win it by his merits. The play shows the effects on himself, his family and his country. Macbeth raises questions about the meaning of human life: what manhood means (and is it different from womanhood or personhood?), the value of power and ethical action, and the extent of our responsibility for our own actions. We will also study how Shakespeare uses imagery to convey his interpretation.
