Caliban was born on the island, the son of Sycorax, whom Tunisians have exiled as a witch. It is not clear if he is beast-like or simply savagely human. When Prospero and Miranda arrived, Caliban showed them the resources of the island and learned from them to speak. After he attempts to rape Miranda, Prospero controls Caliban through magic and makes him do menial tasks such as wood gathering. When the shipwrecked butler Stephano gives Caliban alcohol for the first time, the native mistakes Stephano for a god and offers to worship and serve him. Caliban later persuades Stephano to kill Prospero in order to become king of the island with Miranda as his queen. When the conspirators are faced with fancy clothing, however, Caliban is not distracted, though Stephano and Trinculo are. All three conspirators are then hounded into a mire. Caliban seems repentant when he realizes how mistaken he has been about Stephano and promises to serve Prospero and seek for grace.
In the 1982 Royal Shakespeare Theatre production at Stratford-upon-Avon, Bob Peck (with dreadlocks) plays a repentant Caliban and Derek Jacobi (right) as Prospero.
